ESSAY 2
TYPES of ATTACHMENT and THEIR IMPACT on THE REST OF OUR LIVES
Attachment is an emotional connection that a person establishes with another person. Among all the bonds that a person has established throughout his life, the most important one is the bond he has established with his mother. Attachment styles are also shaped by the relationships that infants establish with their mothers during infancy, and these styles are divided into three as secure attachment, anxious-insecure attachment, and avoidant-insecure attachment. In this essay; causes and effects of secure attachment, reasons and effects of anxious-insecure attachment, and causes and effects of avoidant-insecure attachment will be mentioned.
Secure attachment is the type of attachment in which the mother's basic needs such as food, drink, shelter, security and love are met unconditionally from the moment the child is born. The most important reason that creates secure attachment is that the mother is more interested in her babies and returns to the baby's needs more quickly compared to other attachments. The baby's feelings are reciprocated and the mother is always within reach for her baby. The effects of a secure attachment on a person's life are quite high. The most important of these effects is that the person does not need effort to be accepted and loved. In addition, they are better than other people at forming long-term and healthy relationships. Moreover, they are constructive and optimistic in their relationships. They are more forgiving and understanding in the face of mistakes made to them.
Anxious attachment, the second type of attachment, results from the mother's inconsistency in meeting the child's needs. Sometimes the mother is there for the needs of the child, sometimes not . In this case, it creates a trust problem in the child. When the child is separated from his mother, he experiences incredible anxiety and this anxiety continues for a long time. Unfortunately, the effects of this attachment on one's life are negative. The most important example of these negative effects is the fear of abandonment that the person will experience throughout his life. No matter how deep their relationship is, it will be short-lived. Furthermore, they do not believe that their expectations are somehow met in their relationships and they always want more. In addition, their attitude to themselves is similar to their attitude to others. Sometimes they feel good and sometimes they feel inadequate.
The last type of attachment, the avoidant attachment, is the attachment in which the mother is indifferent and distant. The mother ignores or does not notice the child's needs. Therefore, the child does not understand the presence or absence of the mother. The effects of this type of attachment on the person's life are quite high as in other attachment types. The main problem with this attachment is the problem of trust. For instance; the person avoids emotional relationships and has little investment in their relationships. Even if they have a desire to belong somewhere, they prefer solitude for fear of rejection. These individuals have the least desire to be parents among their attachment styles.
In conclusion; the effects of attachment types show that the bond the baby forms with his mother affects his communication with both people and himself throughout his life. For this reason, it is very important that the mother goes through this process in a healthy and correct way.
